Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves

Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves revealed

Pokémon Day 2026 brought massive news for fans as Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves have been officially announced as the next big entries in the core Pokémon series. These aren’t just new titles — they kick off the 10th generation of Pokémon games with a fresh setting and story direction.

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company revealed the first trailer for the new games during the latest Pokémon Presents stream, teasing interesting new landscapes built around an island-rich region shaped by winds and surf. Lush jungles, sandy beaches, caves, and even underwater areas featured in the footage — all pointing to a much larger and more open world than we’ve seen before.

New Adventures, New Partners

Surprisingly, they also shown off the three brand-new Gen 10 starter Pokémon:

  • Browt — the Grass-type “Bean Chick Pokémon”
  • Pombon — the friendly Fire-type “Puppy Pokémon”
  • Gecqua — the clever Water-type “Water Gecko Pokémon”

Most chatter online seems to say that the Pomerian inspired Pombon will be quite popular but most already are expecting Pombon’s evolution to be another 2 legged Fire/Fighting type. I hope that Game Freak deviates from this evolution tradition and surprise the fans with a more interesting evolution for Pombon.

The announcement also showcased special Pikachu variants, hinting that even familiar faces are getting fun new twists in this seaside setting.

Exclusive to Switch 2

Both Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are confirmed to be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2, marking the first time a mainline Pokémon title skips release on the original Switch hardware entirely. This exclusivity means the games can take full advantage of the new system’s improved graphics and performance. Hopefully, Game Freak learned their lessons from Pokemon Z-A but I’m also personally excited to see if underwater exploration is it’s own fully fleshed out thing in this game.

Release Window and Excitement

While an exact date hasn’t been announced yet, the games are slated for a 2027 global release, with a simultaneous launch planned for all major regions. That gives fans plenty of time to speculate, rewatch the trailer, and maybe even start thinking about which starter Pokémon they’ll choose first!

With their open-world feel and tropical adventure theme, Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are shaping up to be one of the most exciting Pokémon releases in years — ushering in a new era for the franchise just as it celebrates its 30th anniversary.
