League of Legends PC Preview

Do you love playing Warcraft 3 mod DOTA (Defense of the Ancients)? Then you’re gonna love League of Legends as developer Riot Games create their own PC game based upon their hugely successful mod of Warcraft 3. League of Legends is a competitive online game where players take the role of a powerful Summoner, calling forth and controlling brave Champions in battle.

IGN previews League of Legends:

If you still play Warcraft III online these days, you’re certainly aware of Defense of the Ancients Allstars. In fact, there’s quite a high probability that this enormously popular mod is what you play regularly, not the base game. If so, you know that it holds similar appeal for millions of others around the world even though there’s only a single map, it lacks both matchmaking and stat tracking, and the user interface is on the complex side, even for serious gamers.

Developer Riot Games believes these and other considerations–such as the fervent, active and global nature of the huge Allstars community–all add up to a significant opportunity, one that it has set out to seize with its initial project, League of Legends: Clash of Fates. It’s pretty difficult to argue with this premise, which seems to put two questions squarely in the spotlight. How well will the team capture the compelling spirit of DotA’s gameplay while addressing its main limitations in a full game built from the ground up? And how effectively will the company build awareness and interest among the mod’s legions of players?
