The Fallacy of Unlimited plans

You see, hear, and read about these so called “Unlimited” plans on the web, newspapers or even on the olde TV. Promising “Unlimited” access, usage, and or capacity, these marketing promotions entice users to sign up for whatever it is that they are selling. These promos usually ask you to pay for a fixed rate and in return, you get “unlimited” bandwidth, calls, or even storage capacity.

But are we really getting the “Unlimited” part of the deal?

Real world experience shows that your “Unlimited” experience can be hampered by several things such as:

  • Access quality – Example: Yes you can store as much as you want but your upload rate is limited to 5 files a day or 5kbps. or the server performance is poor leading to slow websites.
  • Hidden dependencies – Example: Sure, you can serve as many websites as you can but dont go over the CPU usage per account! or your server keeps going down.
  • Your actual day to day usage cost: Example: Paying $25 for an unlimited hosting plan doesnt make any sense as you never go over what a $5 hosting plan gives. In the end, you end up paying more.

So i suggest you take a long hard look at these unlimited plans as you may be getting the short end of the (marketing) stick.
